Abstract
The author has made a survey on what the "Nomang", a Korean native expression for general senile psychiatric disorders, is meant to Koream rural peaple.
A total of 167 rural residents who visited Weon-Seong Health Center for medical check-up has been interviewed for such purpose during the period form August l to September 25, 1973.
The majority of respondents were in the age group of 30¡40 years (58.6%) and more than half of them were engaged in farm works. As for the educational background, 23% werre illiterate and 39% were the primary school graduates.
The summary of result of interview is as follos;
1. The majority (84%) of the interviewees were found to be knowing the meaning of "Nomang".
2. Roughly half(54%) of them responded that thay do not take "Nomang" as a disease.
3. In general, they were thinking that the cause of "Nomang" is a somatic nature.
4. The most of them responded that the " Nomang" usually affect the people at age of 70 years or older.
5. The most common symtoms of "Nomang" they gave were "incontinence of urine and/or feces", "irrelevant speech" and "mental confusion".
From the survey result and review of literature, it is understood that the term "Nomang" consists of not only senile psychosis but also physical and functional disorders of brain such as arteriosclerotic psychosis.
It is the author¢¥s impression that the idea of rural people on "Nomang" consisted of more somatic conception rather than psychological or super-natura ones.
